Anna Eleanor Roosevelt was born on October 11, 1884, into one of the wealthiest families of all the New York elite. In that world, the only thing that mattered for a woman was to look beautiful, and a certain socially-defined standard of beauty at that. But from this furnace of growing up in a world in which she never really belonged, she became one of the greatest leaders of the twentieth century.
