5. Archaeologists Uncover Maya Ball Court
While excavating for housing development, Fernando Acevedo and Donato Martin España discovered a 2500-year-old court used for a ball game that played a central role in religious and royal ceremonies for the Mayas.
The ball court was about 70% intact, and the game itself was common to several Mesoamerican cultures, with the earliest dating back to 1500 BC. The housing development plans are now being adapted to accommodate the existing ball court.
