49. Gandhi
Mohandas Gandhi was a politician and social activist in India, and he led the movement for Indian independence from Britain. For his work, people called him the Father of India and they also referred to him as Mahatma, meaning Great Soul. Before returning to India, he studied law in England, where he encountered the Bible and fellow vegetarians working toward social justice. Plus, he witnessed the severe systemic injustice while spending two decades in South Africa, a country under apartheid rule. Gandhi developed a philosophy of nonviolent protest to achieve political ends, which has been adopted by revolutionaries around the world, including in America and South Africa.
