In 1984, Geraldine Ferraro became the first woman to be featured on a major-party ticket in a presidential election when she was the running mate for Walter Mondale. Ultimately, Mondale lost to Reagan, but Ferraro said of the experience, “This candidacy is not just a symbol, it’s a breakthrough.
