29. Richard III’s Remains Were Found Under a Parking Lot
King Richard III died during the War of the Roses in the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485. For years, the remains of King Richard III were believed to have been thrown in the River Soar. In reality, he was buried in an unmarked grave. Hundreds of years later, in 2012, the remains were discovered under a parking lot in Leicester, United Kingdom. Archeologists from the University of Leicester excavated his skull and DNA samples were taken in order to identify the remains. Then, they used software photogrammetry to create a 3D reconstruction of his face. Once this was complete, artists made a plastic model to show a real-life depiction of what he would look like. He was only 32 years old when he died. For years, people believed he was a hunchback, because of William Shakespeare’s record. However, the skeletal remains prove that he only had a curved spine.
