27. Caligula Was a Tyrant of an Emperor

Gaius Caesar Augustus Germanicus was called “Caligula“, which was a nickname given to him by Roman soldiers that means “little boot”. Caligula was the third Roman emperor. He ascended to power when he was just 20 years old, because he ascended after his father’s death. Unfortunately, inherited power is often undeserved. He is remembered for being a nasty tyrant, sexual sadist, and an all-around bad dude. (Think Joffrey from Game of Thrones.) Because of this, his rule only lasted for just under 4 years. Plenty of busts, statues, and portraits were made the capture Caligula’s handsome features. So, it was actually easy to get a good general idea of what he looks like. An artist named Dan Voshart used a bust of Caligula to show what he would have looked like as a real person, and it truly does look spot-on.
