The United States began its “war on drugs” in the 1980s by, among other things, targeting cartels and drug trafficking routes in Mexico and Central America. In 2006, Calderon declared a war on drugs in Mexico in a move that paralleled America’s efforts. Since 2006, 200,000 Mexicans died in the war on drugs.
