55. Learning to Travel in the Cold
Knud Rasmussen was an ethnologist and Danish explorer who decided to travel across the American Arctic in the longest dogsled journey. During this time, Rasmussen also studied all of the tribes he met along the way, which helped launch the Arctic into history textbooks. Instead of trying to fill in a map, Rasmussen focused on the people who lived in the areas. Rasmussen also traveled to Greenland, learning about the language, hunting, and how to manage traveling in the cold weather. During one of his longest explorations, Rasmussen traveled about 20,000 miles and became known as the “Father of Eskimology.”
