4. James Madison liked his wife to carry him
James Madison is usually portrayed as solemn to the point of stoicism, and the reports of his contemporaries do not note him as a man of mirth for the most part. But when at his Virginia plantation, Montpelier, the author of the Bill of Rights allowed himself some time for fun. Montpelier was perpetually filled with guests and extended family and Madison enjoyed romping on the lawns with the children, and with his wife Dolley, who often carried Madison piggy-back as she was chased about the grounds by the children and other adult guests, carrying similar burdens of their own.
