Barnsley Public Hall Disaster

On January 11, 1908, a crowd of children showed up to watch a show at the Barnsley Public Hall in West Riding of Yorkshire, England. The theater was showing a film for children that cost just 1 penny. It attracted so many kids to show up, that the room quickly became overcrowded. When all of the seats were filled, the kids started to stand in the second-floor gallery, and were pressed against a railing. One of the employees became concerned that these kids might fall over the railing. So he shouted to the crowd that some of the kids needed to move downstairs. Unfortunately, the kids were startled by this, and started rushing towards the stairs. Children were pushing one another to make it down the staircase, which caused some to fall and become trampled. A total of 16 children passed, and 40 were injured.
